Legal and Policy Intern Vacancy Amsterdam

Internship description

The intern will be based in our Amsterdam office and participate in projects Climate Focus is carrying out for its international clients, ranging from supporting the development of national and international laws and policies, to preparing guidance documents on policy issues and advising on climate change projects and programs. As integral part of the team, you will encounter some of the dynamic challenges of what we do best. Specific tasks foreseen include:

  • Researching national and international laws and policies relevant to climate change;
  • Preparing written analysis on a variety of subjects, including carbon pricing (taxes, ETS etc.), REDD+, and international and domestic governance arrangements for climate-related mechanisms;
  • Contributing to project design and administration;
  • Contributing to the preparation of proposals;
  • Drafting and negotiating contracts.

The internship will run for a period of 3 months, with possible extension for another 3 months. Internship positions with Climate Focus are paid based on prior experience.



Successful candidates will have:

  • Full written and spoken proficiency in English, including proven ability to write papers, articles or reports. Spanish language skills are an advantage;
  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline (law, public policy, international relations, economics etc.), with at least one of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree having been in law (LLB, LLM or equivalent); Interdisciplinary studies related to environment / climate change are an advantage;
  • Proven affinity with environment, climate change and sustainability;
  • Excellent research and science-based working skills;
  • Previous experience in the field of carbon pricing (carbon taxes, ETS, offsets) and/or international climate change governance are considered an advantage;
  • Permission to work in the Netherlands.
