The Endesa Climate Initiative
The Endesa Climate Initiative is the world’s first large scale carbon procurement initiative launched by an industrial company. Initially aimed at buying 15 million tonnes CO2e, Endesa succceeded in contracting over 70 million tonnes CO2e by the end of 2006, and continues its purchasing programme in 2007.
Endesa is Spain’s largest energy company and the number one player in the South American power markets. Committed to its sustainable development policy and to complying with its requirements under the European Emissions trading Scheme, Endesa started the Endesa Climate Initiative (ECI). Climate Focus has been instrumental in designing and implementing this scheme, which has become one of the premier procurement programmes in the carbon market.
By the end of 2006, the ECI attracted over 90 projects., About 25 of these project have resulted in carbon contracts and represent more than 70 million Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) so far.
Climate Focus has delivered the following for the ECI:
- project identification and sourcing in China, Chile, Colombia, India, Brazil, Mexico, Russia;
- due diligence and contract negotiations;
- a marketing and publicity programme; as well as
- legal support.
