Climate Focus to Facilitate the Emerging Carbon Market
25 November 2004, The Netherlands
Today Climate Focus has announced the start of its operations. The newly founded company aims at assisting governments and companies that face carbon restrictions and international and regional organizations intermediating carbon purchases with procurement of carbon credits. The founder Adriaan Korthuis draws from a wealth of experience in carbon procurement from the pioneering programmes ERUPT and CERUPT of the Dutch government agency Senter.
Korthuis: “Today, just three years before the start of the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol and merely a month before the start of allowance trading under the European Emissions Trading Scheme, responding to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a top priority for many governments and companies. Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation are crucial mechanisms to achieve compliance with emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol. The window of opportunity to benefit from the flexibility these mechanisms offer to governments and companies is closing fast. More and more governments and companies are considering to participate in CDM and JI projects. The art of bringing together buyers and project developers is the key to success in the fast growing carbon market. Climate Focus combines extensive experience with setting up procurement structures, contracting and carbon marketing. This ensures high quality services, both in the framework of Kyoto Protocol and European Emissions Trading Scheme as in the development of strategies for future commitments to reduce the effects of climate change.”
Among the services of Climate Focus:
- Setting up carbon procurement structures;
- Assistance in carbon procurement and marketing and project development;
- Consulting on climate change and carbon exposure;
- Training staff to perform carbon assessments;
- Research and scientific collaboration with think tanks and academic institutions.
