Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Endesa SA celebrate the signing of a Purchase and Sales Agreement
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (“EMM”) and Endesa SA are celebrating the signature of a Purchase and Sales Agreement, by which Endesa buys the Certified Emission Reductions from a portfolio of landfill gas extraction projects developed by EMM.
The project portfolio consists of four landfills owned and managed by EMM. The landfills will
be covered and the landfill gas will be extracted, by which at least 1.6 million tons of harmful
emissions are avoided until 2012. The projects fulfil the ambition of both EMM and Endesa to
contribute to sustainable development and reduce emissions that contribute to global
warming.
EMM is a municipality in South Africa’s Gauteng province, adjacent to Johannesburg and
Pretoria. EMM is known as the industrial heart of the country and generates about 45 % of the
province’s gross domestic product. EMM aims at a professional and efficient environmental
policy. The current landfill gas projects are part of the ongoing effort to improve waste
management practices in the municipality, reduce the environmental impact and create
benefits for the population.
Endesa is the major energy utility in Spain and Latin America and one of the premier players
in the European power markets. Endesa has grown to be one of the most successful
participants in the CDM markets through its Endesa Climate Initiative.
