The Rockefeller Foundation wanted to know how agriculture could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the lives of farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. The Agricultural Carbon Facility study offers an answer.
Africa’s food supply is threatened by climate change. Shifting weather patterns, diminishing productivity and exhausted soils could undermine the continent’s progress in agricultural soils if practices are not improved and productivity declines. The Rockefeller Foundation asked Climate Focus to assess whether agricultural carbon investments in Africa could improve soil fertility, enhance carbon stocks and contribute to food security.
Climate Focus worked with Forest Trends and Ecoagriculture Partners to write the “African Agricultural Carbon Facility Feasibility Assessment and Design Recommendations” in 2010. This lays out a pathway to harness mitigation and adaptation financing for Africa’s small farmers and large growers. This study envisions a phased approach testing publically-financed agricultural activities, as well as modifying institutional and financial arrangements, on the way toward more private-sector participation. Early steps will lead to a demonstration phase investing in projects with clear potential for scaling up financing. As the demonstration phase shifts to a bridging phase, and ultimately commercialization, an innovative set of transaction models can be used by governments and non-state actors to access climate financing for mitigation and adaptation. The report is available here.
Climate Focus will support this initiative through the development of demonstration activities with clear potential for climate-related financing and GHG mitigation and agricultural adaptation in Africa at scale.
