News : TECHNICAL PAPERS SUPPORT WWF FINANCE WORKING GROUP

5 October 2009

The provision of adequate resources for financing the three building blocks of the Bali Action Plan (mitigation, adaptation, technology) is at the centre of UNFCCC negotiations. The design of an appropriate financial mechanism is therefore an essential element of an agreed outcome at the Copenhagen climate conference in December 2009 (COP-15).  Funding will have to come from public and private sector sources which may be disbursed in a variety of ways. To be most effective these diverse types of funding will need to be coordinated to ensure they work together and make the best use of inevitably limited financial resources. A high level technical working group was convened by the WWF in early 2009 to develop an acceptable framework under which new and existing financial institutions can work effectively and efficiently to ensure successful implementation of the consensus reached in Copenhagen. The working group developed a number of proposals centering around the concept of a UNFCCC administered climate registry. Climate Focus supported the group by contributing a number of technical papers.
