Vacancy in Washington D.C. for a Senior Consultant

Climate Focus is seeking a Senior Consultant to join its Sustainable Land Use and Climate Finance Practice in Washington D.C. The successful candidate will work mainly on projects related to agriculture and forests: deforestation-free commodity production and forest landscape restoration, as well as related standards, policies, and financial mechanisms. Assignments involve day-to-day collaboration with teams in other offices globally.

Current projects include development of business models and partnerships, value chain studies, and assessment of financial mechanism for sustainable production of beef, palm oil, cocoa, soy, and rubber with a focus on Latin America, West Africa, and to a limited extent Southeast Asia.

Specific tasks include: 

  • Hands-on project management with a diverse set of team members and external partners 
  • Analysis and development of business models, strategies, and financial mechanisms for agriculture and forestry
  • Diverse applied research and analysis related to the land sector’s role in climate change: emissions from the land sector, planning and policy, ecosystem services, resource economics, and commodity supply chains
  • Research, analysis and issuing of practical recommendations on climate policy and governance, carbon markets and pricing, and climate finance and green finance products 
  • Draft and edit reports, briefings and proposals
  • Build and manage client relationships
  • Support the expansion of Climate Focus’s project pipeline

Requirements for succesful applications:

  • An advanced degree (at minimum a Master’s degree) in environmental sciences, and/or economics, finance, or business administration
  • At least 6 years-experience in the field of climate change, agriculture, forestry, and/or development financeStrong understanding of the practical, scientific, economic, social, and political dimensions of climate change mitigation in the  land sector. Strong analytical capacities and quantitative skills
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex assignments under minimal supervision
  • Strong work ethic, writing and communication skills
  • Strong collaboration abilities, both internally and externally
  • Excellent organizational skills, and comfortable managing multiple tasks and working with a fast-paced international team
  • Fluency in English with strong preference for additional languages including Spanish and French
  • Permission to live and work in the U.S. – no Visa sponsorship offered
  • Willingness to travel and on short notice.

The candidate should be an entrepreneurial and strong team player, who is able to manage complex assignments with a dynamic team, and has experience managing and cultivating relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders including corporations, NGOs, governments, and academics.
